Gold Dust, Gems & Texts?

Talking to a good friend today we were joking about a church conference coming up soon that he was helping with. Gowing up in Pentecostal circles we saw some interesting things. In our conversation the supposed manifestation of gold dust came up. This was popular in my teenage/college years and we had speakers come speak that had gold dust fallling as they spoke. The new manifestation is gems in place of gold I was told. I looked it up on google and found a few things claiming this new manifestation.
I will admit I am quite sceptical when I hear of people flocking to churches because of gold dust and gems falling on them. I have been in these services.
I grew up going to services with many friends who experienced many "signs and wonders".
Yet I ask myself was it true seeking of God, or seeking a sign. God knows... and I will never know, and I don't need to. What I do know is that many of them today are not walking with Christ but are living in pursuit of this worlds ill pleasures. How can that be?
So Could this be some sort of spiritual wonder? One would suppose God could do what he wills! Yet the scriptures are clear that he does all for His glory! Our basis should be scripture should it not.Not even the most well meaning person/pastor/evangelist who claims things of God is outside of scripture.I ask myself.......
How does this sign bring glory to God? How does it advance the gospel? Why didn't Jesus use it? Does it draw true seekers or people wanting signs, gold, gems that will fall away when the high is over, or life gets hard or persecution comes? Does missions get furthered. Is Christ esteemed as more value than the sign or do we seek the things we beleive are from his table and hand? Are there any texts that would support or give means for it. If you know of any please advise me.

The Assemblies of God recently issued a excellent statement of caution regarding these manifestation among others. I think they did an good job of not seeking to hinder spiritual things, yet seeking to make all things be liable to and held under scriptural texts if they are to be supported. I fully agree, which leads me back to the question, what are the texts?

Assemblies of God: Resolution 16
We must admit that an omnipotent God could place gold fillings in teeth and gold dust on individuals. But can such events be empirically demonstrated? [10] If it is for a sign to those present, the reason for the sign should be evident. But to run after such signs and wonders makes us little more than the Pharisees who came to Jesus asking to see a sign from heaven (Mark 8:11).
