Christians & Environmentalism - Part 2

Christianity Today recently carried this article in relation to Creation care & Global Warming; Dobson, Others Seek Ouster of NAE Vice President

"I am today raising a flag of opposition to this alarmism about global warming and urging all believers to refuse to be duped by these 'earthism' worshippers," the Rev. Jerry Falwell said in a Feb. 25 sermon on "The Myth of Global Warming" at his Lynchburg, Va., church.

Focus on the Family Chairman James Dobson and others said the NAE vice president's activism on global warming is "a threat to the unity and integrity" of the organization.

More than two dozen evangelical leaders are seeking the ouster of the Rev. Richard Cizik from the National Association of Evangelicals because of his "relentless campaign" against global warming

The NAE's interim president, Leith Anderson, said Friday he expects the board to stand by Cizik, who directs the NAE's Washington office.

"I'm supportive of Rich Cizik," Anderson said. "I think that he is highly respected in Washington and is a forthright spokesman for creation care and that's good."

My question is why can a believer not be opposed and active in the cause taking care of the environment just as much as he or she is active in opposition of abortion, genocide in Dar fur and other injustices plaguing our world today. I wonder sometimes if the "Religious Right" has got so political they cannot separate causes from politics just as they so often criticize their liberal counterpart of doing. I too am very concerned about the injustice of abortion, but that doesn't mean that I cannot care about pollution, or deforestation happening in the African homeland of my children that is causing shortages of food, water, shelter, and sustainable farmland which leads to more poverty, and more diseases, and more starvation and death. This is a global problem. I feel often we are so "Western" focused that we as Christians cannot see past our posh lifestyles to the plights of the rest of the world as long as we can get cheap products at Walmart.
