Osteen Critique

Locusts & Wild Honey blog critiqued a Joel Osteen message from his Lakewood Church which is now Americas largest church and one of Americas most highly acclaimed pastors. I thought it was a good critique. Here's an excerpt.

"Between each story Osteen reinforced his point with metaphorical challenges to stand out in the crowd, swim upstream, and soar like eagles; as well as his favorite homespun aphorism of the day, “cream always rises to the top.” No Christ, no cross, no mention of man’s moral bankruptcy, just the feel-good positive message of assurance that God always rewards human effort and virtue."

While I haven't listened to Osteen in the past few months I try to catch him when I can. I have to say I have not heard a God centered, Christ exalting, Bible based sermon in all the times I have listened. I have like this author heard many skyscraper sermons with short outtakes on verses and lots of stories and illustrations that make you feel very good, but that's about it.

I'm interested to see if anyone has ever heard him dig into texts and deal with hard issues besides wealth and heath enhancement?
